Question: How tall do herbs grow? I’m designing herb gardens on either side of my entryway, almost like a cottage garden. I want it to be layered by height, so you can see everything from the walkway to the house. Is there a basic guide I can use to design my herb beds? -Jennifer R.
Answer: Herb plants come in almost every possible height, from low-slung groundcovers to those that can reach six feet tall. Here’s a list of the possible heights that each variety of mature herb plant can reach.
- Angelica: 72 to 96 inches
- Bee balm: 18 inches to four feet
- Black elderberry: 10 to 12 feet
- Borage: 18 to 36 inches
- Calendula: One to two feet
- Cardamom: Five to 10 feet
- Catnip: Three to four feet
- Chamomile: Three to six inches
- Chervil: One to two feet
- Chives: One to two feet
- Cilantro: One and a half to two feet
- Costmary: Two to three feet
- Dill: One and a half to five feet
- Fennel: One to eight feet
- Ginger: Two to eight feet
- Lemon balm: Two to three feet
- Lovage: Three to six feet
- Meadowsweet: Three to six feet
- Mint: One to two feet
- Parsley: 12 to 18 inches
