Question…. We used leaf mulch last fall on our raised beds after chopping up with the lawn mower…… Should we turn/till into the soil or remove it before planting this spring?? Leaves are from Maples.
Thanks much.

You can do either one: till the leaves into the soil or leave the shredded leaves on top as mulch. Keep in mind these two things:
1. Leaves are high in carbon. You might want to add some nitrogen to the soil when planting with an organic fertilizer. Grass clippings with the leaves, too, in the long run would add a little nitrogen to your soil.
2. Also, remember that the leaves could lower the soil temperature. So, before you plant you may need to rake the leaf mulch back to let the soil warm a bit.

I planted my vegetable garden 4 weekends ago with seeds and I used cow manure and 13 13 13 and so far none of the seeds have broken through the ground. We have gotten quite a bit of rain, can too much cause my garden not to grow?

I’m new to Fort Worth and love flower gardening. Can you tell me what the white blobs are that appear in my flower beds? It looks like vomit at first and is very moist. Dries to a fine powder and turns light brown. What is it and how should I deal with it?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

@Jo
I’d guess that it’s probably either mold or mushrooms related to watering. If it’s that, then it’s not really going to hurt anything. You often see it in wetter areas, especially if you have fresh mulch or compost that you’ve put down.

Thanks, Lars. Sorry for the delay in my reply. Have been out of town. I was definitely worried that it was something that could affect my entire garden since it blows around when dried. I guess I’ll just go with it and see what happens this year. I appreciate your input.

Hi Jo,
I’ve got those same blobs appearing on my soil in Toronto. Are you seeing vomit-like blobs as large as a big portobello mushroom. It’s got a kind of crust and inside it’s like melted brie and yellowish. It’ll appear overnight. Really, really unsightly. I’ve removed it right away, thinking it is some animal’s vomit. I guess I might let it dry and see what happens. Thanks for your post.
