Weeding is one gardening job that nobody looks forward to. Weeding involves bending down low and spending an inordinate amount of time trying to pull up unwanted plants from your garden beds. No matter how hard you try, sometimes it is just impossible to get every last bit of the roots when pulling up pesky weeds. Even when using a kneeler or a garden bench to help alleviate some pressure from your back and knees when weeding, eventually, the awkward position and repetitive motions that go along with weeding tasks will wear you out physically. And even if you do an excellent job weeding, there always seems to be new weeds growing up from the soil in the same areas that you just cleaned out a few days before.
Luckily, gardeners are not required to weed their gardens by hand, and there are weeding tools available to us that can take a lot of the stress and frustration out of routine weeding tasks. Modern weeding tools can make weeding a much easier job to tackle. The right weeder can help you de-weed your garden area much quicker than you ever could by hand, and can help you get the entirety of those pesky roots that always seem to break before you can pull them out of the ground. Hand weeders can help you tackle smaller weeds and can be used to reach weeds that grow in hard to reach places. Stand up weeders are perfect for weeding large beds, tackling big weeding jobs, and taking lots of pressure off of your back and knees. Ideally, having one of each kind of weeder on hand will make any weeding task into less of a hassle.
Not every weeding tool is created equally, however, and some will give you an edge that other tools just can’t match. So, to save you the headache of buying and returning several weeders until you find the right tool for you, we put together this list of the best weeding tools on the market and combed through hundreds of reviews to determine which weeders were worthy of a spot on our list. We narrowed down the choices to the 10 best hand weeders and the 10 best stand up weeders on the market. Our top 20 picks for weeding tools are listed here and have been carefully reviewed in order to help you decide which tools are right for your toolkit. Let’s dig in a little deeper.
Best Hand Weeders
CobraHead Original Garden Hand Weeding Tool
Find on Amazon. https://amzn.to/2L4fTqB
Though there is really nothing fancy about the CobraHead hand weeder, every year, this tool is ranked as the best manual hand weeding tool on the market. That’s because it is simple, but effective. The CobraHead original weeder is made by gardeners for gardeners, designed by folks who have had years of hands on experience with weeding and know a bit about what kind of tool does the job without requiring too much physical exertion.
The signature curved sharp head is made with tempered steel, and designed to easily plow through any type of soil. The handle is made from recycled plastic and the hand grip has an ergonomic design that can be used by both right or left-handed gardeners. It’s not designed for pulling up especially deep roots, like unwanted trees or shrubs, but then again, no hand weeders are really good at deep roots. There is a reason why CobraHead hand weeders are always one of the most popular weeding tools each year on every list — because they are one of the best hand weeders on the market. All CobraHead products are made in the USA.

Carrot Design Stainless Steel Cape Cod Weeder
Find it on Amazon. https://amzn.to/2JyyZ7k
If you’ve never used a cape cod weeder before, you’re in for a treat. The sharp edge blade lets you skim the tool under the surface of the dirt, cutting weeds at the roots. Even better, the tough, pointed tip of the tool lets you handle situations like picking weeds out of cracks in the sidewalk, or pulling up a stubborn root. Unlike most other cape cod weeders, the metal end is made of stainless steel, which helps prevent rust. It has a hardwood handle and includes a loop so that you can hang it easily in your shed.
Our overall score: 9.5 out of 10.
Fiskars Soft Touch Manual Weed Puller
Find on Amazon. https://amzn.to/3luCuck
The Fiskars Soft Touch hand weeder is a solid manual weeding tool. It is made with forked metal end, curved cast-aluminum head that is rust resistant and features forked tines to give gardeners extra leverage to pull up the entire root of large invasive weeds. The ergonomic grip has a softgrip lining that is made to help lower hand and wrist pain and fatigue from repeated motion.
The handle is extra-large as well, to give users added control and ease of use when removing invasive weeds in tight spaces. Fiskars Soft Touch hand weeder is moderately priced and well-suited to both large and small weeds. Though Fiskars usually makes low budget tools that are often made with cheap plastic parts, their hand weeder is actually quite sturdy, and it’s one of the most versatile and best overall hand weeders on the market.

Radius Garden Ergonomic Aluminum Hand Weeder
Find on Amazon. https://amzn.to/39zrLuI
Radius Garden is known for their heavy duty gardening equipment. Their stand up weeder is perhaps a bit too heavy duty, as it requires a good deal of strength to use and is not recommended for those with limited hand and arm strength. Their hand weeder, has an over-molded ergonomic handle with a soft thermoplastic grip that makes it especially easy to wield. This makes it a good choice for people with weaker hands and arms, or for those that suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome or arthritis.
The handle is designed with what they call a, “Natural Radius Grip,” which provides extra leverage and reduces stress on the hand and wrist. The blade is made from serrated, reinforced aluminum. It is extremely lightweight, yet stronger than steel and supposedly 100% rust proof. The result is a weeder that slides through tightly compacted roots and soil like a knife through warm butter, providing, “optimal performance in all soil conditions.”
Our overall score: 8.5/10
Edward Tools Weeding Tool
Find on Amazon. https://amzn.to/39yWuIr
The Edward Tools weeder has a curved stainless steel base that acts as a fulcrum to help you pull up pesky weeds with ease. Just rest the base on the grass and put the lever action to use to pull up large weeds. Many manual weeders have short tips, while the Edward Tools weeder has a deep v nose design, which allows users the ability to dig deeper and pull up the deepest roots and toughest weeds to keep them from growing back.
The extra large ergonomic handle is cushioned to provide comfort and prevent fatigue. The weeder is made with rust proof stainless steel and its handle is made from a solid piece of wood, so it should be durable and long-lasting. But, if it does break or wear down over time, Edward Tools backs it up with a no questions asked lifetime warranty. This is a quality tool at a low budget price.
There is one downside, however, which is that this tool is not well-suited to thin roots. Smaller weeds tend to slip right through its grasp, unfortunately. So, if you pick up the Edwards Tools weeder, you may want to pair it with another weeder that can handle smaller weeds with longer, thinner roots.

Flexrake CLA329 Classic Dandelion Weeder
Find on Amazon. https://amzn.to/2VuJBHc
The Flexrake Dandelion Weeder has a very similar design to the Edwards Tool weeder, with a curved steel base that acts as a fulcrum to provide leverage for the forked weeder head. Made with oak handles and carbon steel blades, the Flexrake weeder is a part of Flexrake’s Classic Series, which is a complete line of garden hand tools that are designed after antique tools for nostalgic craftsmanship that will stand the test of time. Like the Edwards Tool weeder, it is also not very well-suited to pulling up thin roots. However, super affordable and well made is a good combination.

Our overall score: 10/10 (But -2 for safety hazard and -1.5 for likely damaging any nearby plants)
Best Stand Up Weeders
Grampa’s Weeder Stand Up Weed Puller
Find on Amazon. https://amzn.to/3mxU0O6
As you would expect from a tool named after Grampa, this weeder is a little bit old fashioned but rugged and durable. Its powder-coated steel blades and foot plate make pulling up tough weeds in their entirety, a walk in the park. It’s 45 inch-long, sturdy bamboo handle saves plenty of wear and tear on your back and knees, as you can perform any weeding task standing up straight. You don’t need to lean over the job or tilt and hover, as you do with some stand up weeders, as Grampa’s 45 inch weed puller is long enough to keep even the tallest gardeners vertical. Its steel 4-claw design can easily pull up different types of weeds from any soil type, even in especially wet or dry conditions. However, it doesn’t have a release mechanism or trigger, so the teeth, or tines, must be cleaned out manually. Once you try a stand up weeder with a trigger release, it’s tough to consider one without it, but the durability and strength of Grampa’s stand up weeder keeps it in the running for best stand-up weeder.
Our overall score: 8.5/10
CobraHead Long Handle Weeder
Find on Amazon. https://amzn.to/3ohQR5r
The CobraHead long handle weeder is a great gardening tool that was designed by gardeners for gardeners. Like their hand weeder, the CobraHead long handle weeder features their signature curved head made with tempered steel that can plow through any soil. CobraHead long handled weeders are available in three sizes (48”, 54”, 60”) for gardeners of different heights. Their handles are made from North Carolina ash, which is strong and durable.
This is a great weeder tool, but unfortunately, it is not suited for pulling up deeply-rooted weeds. So, you will still need to purchase a more heavy duty stand up weeder to tackle unwanted trees and shrubs. However, the CobraHead long handle weeder will still come in handy for plenty of different tasks aside from weeding, as it is basically a plow that can weed, cultivate soil, and can help with digging, edging, and planting jobs. All CobraHead products are made in the USA.

Fiskars Deluxe Stand Up Four Claw Weeder
Find on Amazon. https://amzn.to/36yp0YR
Fiskars Stand Up Four Claw weeder is 39 inches long, which is a bit short for especially tall gardeners. For the most part, however, it will help keep your knees and back from straining too much while de-weeding your lawn and garden. The design of its four claws, made from serrated stainless steel, makes for easy grabbing and uprooting, consistently getting every bit of the roots. The four claw design also has an easy-sliding ejection function that makes tossing out the weeds you pull up, all in one fluid motion, a fun and easy procedure. This stand up weeder works well for large and small weeds and is backed by a full lifetime warranty. It’s a good thing it is though, because it is made with plastic parts that are prone to breaking. That’s a rather disappointing flaw.
Nisaku NJP1010 Weeding Tool
Find on Amazon. https://amzn.to/36tOo1Q
At just under $25, you would think the Nisaku weeding tool would be a rather flimsy, poorly-made stand up weeder. However, this is a very nice product, made by a japanese company that specializes in Hori-Hori gardening knives. It has a 4.5 inch stainless steel blade and a 45 inch wooden handle. It can be used as a traditional garden hoe and a weeder. Its length will keep you from having to kneel in the dirt, but unfortunately, the blade is only suited to removing shallow roots, and is not long enough to get deeply rooted weeds. The blade is constructed with a shank that is forged in one piece and connected to the blade, which makes it extra durable and bend resistant. For the price, this is a great tool, but you will still need to purchase a more heavy duty weeder to get deeply rooted weeds and unwanted trees and shrubs.
Our overall score: 7/10
When you are equipped with the proper tools for the job, weeding goes from being a pain in the neck, to a simple task that can be handled in minutes. After you pull up all the weeds in your beds, consider adding a layer of mulch around your plants to keep weeds from growing back up. Mulching also helps improve water retention, which can cut down on how often you have to water your beds. Once your beds are free of weeds, they will not only look more appealing, but the plants that you decided to grow in those beds no longer have to battle against invasive weeds for their fair share of water and nutrients. Get the right weeding tools to make weeding jobs quick and easy, then implement a zero tolerance policy for weeds in your garden beds.
