Default Carbon particles in soil?

I was looking at some Brita water filter cartridges I have used up and was wondering if it would be safe to mix the carbon from the used water filters into potting soil for indoor plants?

It is supposed to be made from carbonized coconit husks or something... but I was wondering if anyone tried this before?

It's my first time to hear about it. Be sure and get info from the manufacturer that made it but I assume that if you use the used one, you'll also get the dirt particles that it had filtered.
