What is a worm tower? Is this some kind of gadget or method of worm composting?

I’ve learned that a worm tower is used for easier segregation of the finished compost from the undigested scraps. It is built in 3 to 5 layers of trays depending on your worm castings requirement. The concept is that after the worms were already through with digesting the scraps in the bottom tray, the worms will go hungry and seek more food towards the upper trays, sort of migrating. Thus you avoid messy sorting of the unfinished compost.

A worm tower is a feeding station for worms. They can enter the tower to feed and exit the tower to roam the garden.

You can make your own worm tower using a large PVC drain pipe:

Drill 1/2 to 3/4 inch holes in the lower 2 feet of a 3 feet long PVC pipe. Pound the pipe into the garden and see to it that the holes in the bottom are covered with soil. Then put kitchen scraps and other worm food into the pipe and add a pound of red wigglies. Then cover the pipe with screen to keep out flies and other pests.

Worm towers are the best way to segregate your worms so you can keep them in bins over the winter.

To do this, put feed in your worm tower as scheduled. A day or two after, pull out the tower and gather up all the worms and the food still present in there and place them in a bin. Then put your tower back and place new food. Do this repeatedly until no more worms can be found in the worm tower.
