Lightbulb Worm questions..

How many worms do you need for a trial and error vermicomposting? I mean, at least I wont waste worms if I do not succeed at first..
How do you know the amount of food can you feed your worms?
What to do with the worms if I chose to stop vermicomposting?

I started my first worm pile with about 200 worms. I used a redwood half-barrel, some dirt from the yard, a handful or two of cornmeal and enough water to moisten. I kept the dirt moist but not soggy, and with regular small feedings, the population grew. When the barrel started getting crowded with worms, I added more dirt as bedding and kept it up. When the barrel wouldn't hold any more dirt and the worms were getting crowded, I divided it, half stayed in the barrel, half went to a non-enclosed pile in the yard. I kept feeding both populations and I divided again. That was 20+ years ago, and now I have 4 lively piles, and probably a million worms. We shred our junkmail, and nearly all of our kitchen waste gets composted here. We've cut down our outgoing waste to less than half.

If you decide to not keep worms anymore, you just stop feeding them. They'll die off and the population will reduce to whatever can be supported by what can be had.

You can just use soil conditioners right?
