I love hanging baskets. They are big space savers, and they make small gardens seem more lush. I could probably put small potted trees for height but that'll take up space. Having hanging baskets gives the impression that I have tall plants and all.

Among the varieties that @gardengirl listed, I love bougainvilleas, dwarf marigold and english ivy. I also recall seeing a variety of cactus that's somewhat viney and can be planted in a hanging basket. I don't know the name though.

Here's some tips I picked up over the years while trying my hand in hanging basket gardening:

- Trim deadheads, wilting leaves and back plants that are taking over the planter
- Place baskets in the shade, but with easy access to water (like rain) if you're going away
- Make sure your basket is well anchored. Plants do carry some weight and when you're watering them, they get a bit heavier.
